Guards & Appliances
Dental appliances are orthodontic and dental devices whose uses include improving the alignment of your teeth and protecting your teeth from injury. They include permanent dental appliances such as bridges, crowns, fillings, and braces. Removable dental appliances are used temporarily or during specific times of the day. They include dentures, retainers, and mouth guards and are custom-made appliances designed and fabricated at the dental lab to comfortably fit the contours of your mouth.
Bruxism or teeth grinding is a dental problem that occurs predominantly whilst sleeping. It involves an unconscious grinding, gnashing, and clenching of the teeth, with severe bruxism leading to jaw disorders and damaged teeth. Custom-made night guards are a useful tool to help prevent damage to teeth caused by teeth grinding. Their custom fit provides comfort and durability, and there are several material options, such as hard mouth guards and softer mouth guards, depending on their use.
A retainer is a custom-made dental appliance designed to keep your teeth in alignment after your orthodontic treatment is complete. There are two types of removable retainer, the first being a clear plastic retainer that sits over the top of your upper teeth. The second type of retainer is made from an acrylic or plastic plate that sits against the roof of your mouth with metal wires to support your teeth which are attached to it.
Sports Mouth Guards
Sports mouthguards are often recommended for children and adults who play contact sports. They provide a protective layer over the upper teeth, reducing the risk of knocking out a tooth in the event of a blow. While boil-and-bite over-the-counter mouth guards offer some protection from injury, a custom-made mouth guard is designed to fit the contours of your mouth. Mouth guards that align with the shape of your teeth provide superior protection.
